Start your journey in Aeroponic Vertical Cultivation – Indoor/Outdoor – All year round, with Tower Garden

Amazing 40-tower Tower Farm project in Portugal was installed in a penitentiary by Agrotonomy, with the help of the prisoners and guards. This innovative aeroponic farm is specifically designated for long-term inmates who are nearing the end of their incarceration sentences. The project not only provides an opportunity for these individuals to learn valuable skills related to sustainable agriculture, but it also fosters a sense of responsibility and community bonding among those involved. Half of the crops produced are utilized in the prison kitchen, significantly enhancing the nutritional quality of meals for the inmates, while the other half is generously donated to low-income families living in the nearby surroundings, aiming to support and uplift the local community. This initiative exemplifies a progressive approach to rehabilitation, allowing the participants to contribute positively to society while gaining hands-on experience in modern farming techniques.

The installers spent two days installing the entire farm with the prisoners, which included not only the meticulous assembly of 40 aeroponic towers but also the installation of an advanced automated irrigation and nutrient dosing system. This system was designed to optimize water efficiency and ensure the precise delivery of essential nutrients to the plants, thereby enhancing their growth potential. Additionally, they engaged in the careful preparation of the nutrient solution, ensuring that each component was accurately measured and mixed to meet the specific needs of the crops being cultivated. To complement these technical aspects, they developed a comprehensive planting strategy, which involved selecting a diverse range of crops suitable for aeroponic growth. This strategy was crucial in establishing a continuous rotation of crops on the tower, thereby maximizing yield and sustaining production year-round, ensuring that fresh produce was always available for the facility and the wider community.

This project was implemented by UpFarming, a nonprofit organization based in Lisbon that is wholeheartedly committed to providing sustainable agricultural solutions in urban environments, as well as within prisons and schools throughout Portugal. By engaging local communities and fostering a deep connection between people and the land, UpFarming aims to promote environmentally friendly agriculture practices that not only enhance food security but also empower individuals. Their initiatives often include hands-on workshops, educational programs, and collaborative gardens, all designed to inspire a sense of responsibility towards sustainable food production. As a result, UpFarming plays a crucial role in transforming urban spaces into vibrant green areas while simultaneously addressing social issues, such as improving mental well-being and creating opportunities for personal development.
